Jacquelyn Ma

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Jacquelyn Ma spent half of her childhood amidst the tall skyscrapers and lively streets of the bustling city. As a result, Ms. Ma has always had a passion for the vivacious lifestyle of the city. In 1997, when China regained control of Hong Kong, Ms. Ma and her mother and sisters immigrated to the United States. For 13 years, Ms. Ma has lived in the little town of Foster City in northern California. Though it has been 13 years since her emigration, Ms. Ma still remembers the hardship and difficulty of moving to a foreign country and learning a new language. However, having come from both a Chinese and Korean background, she was accustomed to constant exposure to a variety of languages and cultures. Thus, Ms. Ma has a strong passion and ability to adapt and learn about the different cultures and languages in the world.

Currently, Ms. Ma is a junior pursuing a major in Business Economics at the University of California, Irvine. In the fall quarter of 2008, Ms. Ma pledged for the Pi Sigma chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi. With 11 other members, she was initiated into the Beta class which became the first official pledge class of the Pi Sigma chapter. Despite the hardships that occurred during the pledging process, she was able to create close bonds with the rest of her pledge class. Then, as a newly initiated brother, Ms. Ma wanted to become involved and proactive with the chapter, and thus took on the position of Vice President of Community Service for the winter and spring quarters in 2009. During that term, she planned three community service events which consisted of packing food at the local food bank, participating in Relay For Life for the American Cancer Society, and partaking in preservation projects for the Environmental Nature Center.       In the summer of 2009, she went to study abroad in Beijing to improve upon her Mandarin. After the program ended in two months, Ms. Ma traveled to Hong Kong for four weeks. During her stay there, Ms. Ma was able to gain her first real job experience in the business world. Though she has previously worked at Kumon, her work experience there could never prepare her for or compare with the work experience she received in that summer. Ms. Ma was lucky to gain a short internship at Prudential Insurance Company where she was able to gain exposure to a big firm. Then, after two weeks, she moved on to work at Peak Capital as an intern assistant. There she was able to absorb the culture of a small private firm that contrasted with Prudential. Though the jobs only lasted four weeks, Ms. Ma gained experience not only working in firms of different sizes, but she also gained experience working with people of different cultural backgrounds.

Upon her return in the United States in fall 2009, Ms. Ma served as the Vice President of Scholarship and Awards. Currently, Ms. Ma is the Vice President of Alumni Relations. Through her experience with serving on the Executive Committee, Ms. Ma has improved in numerous skills that are necessary in the business world. Having once been excessively shy and soft-spoken, Ms. Ma has become more confident when giving speeches and speaking about her opinions. Moreover, Delta Sigma Pi has taught Ms. Ma to better herself professionally. Most importantly, Ms. Ma has learned the values of brotherhood that has allowed her to make strong bonds with the others members of the chapter.

Outside of the fraternity, Ms. Ma enjoys playing tennis and badminton. She also enjoys a quiet time of reading her favorite books such as Harry Potter. At this moment, Ms. Ma cannot pave the exact road that she will take after graduation, but she will take all that she has learned through her work experience and the fraternity to apply to wherever the road takes her.
