He spent most of his childhood growing in the city of El Monte and had all of his pre-collegiate education in this city as well. Throughout his 13 years of schooling, computers and music played a big part of his childhood. He remembers playing Math Blaster and Word Munchers on old Apple computers back in kindergarten and couldn’t get enough of it. His passion for computers continued to grow as he became more and more familiarized with them. In 3rd grade, his teacher had a broken computer in the class and would let Johnny spend class time taking it apart to look on the inside to see how it worked; granted, he was not able to fix it but it was a great experience nonetheless. In 5th grade, he became in charge of all the computers in the classroom and was the go-to tech guy when a student was having an issue. This lasted all throughout junior high and high school as well! A little known fact though is that he didn’t acquire his own personal computer until the 6th grade so it is a mystery where his love for computers stemmed from. Music also played a great role in the life of Johnny Thoi. In the 5th and 6th grade, Johnny participated in the Musical Theater Group plays held at school and held two leading roles which included solos. In the school’s production of the Wizard of Oz, he held the part of the Tin Man and the following year, he played Chef Louis of The Little Mermaid. Although the latter part only consisted of a single song for the entire play., he was adored by all and received standing ovations after every show. It was then that he realized his passion for music. Continuing in the 7th and 8th grade, Johnny joined the school choir but decided to also expand his horizons by picking up a musical instrument. After careful consideration, he started off with the flute in the 7th grade. This was the first time that he had to learn to read music though but loved every minute of it. As he excelled at the flute, he also picked up the snare drum when he was in the 8th grade. Playing these concurrently in 8th grade enhanced both his musical and rhythmic abilities, which would be crucial in the upcoming high school years.
As 8th grade came to an end, Johnny was ready for high school and decided he would audition for the high school’s marching band. Between flute and the drums, he figured he’d have a better shot at flute seeing as how he had almost two years experience. The audition turned out to be very successful and he was admitted into the high school “Senior Band”. His love for music continually grew throughout high school and Johnny cherished every moment of it but decided halfway through his sophomore year that he needed to expand his musical horizons. As fate would have it, the marching band was lacking trombones that semester so Johnny saw this as an opportunity to pick that up! He tried it and fell in love instantly with rich lows and warm tones that the trombone could offer. He excelled at this as well and became section leader soon after. In addition to the flute, drums, and trombone, he picked up the baritone, tuba, French horn, marimba, and xylophone by the end of his senior year.
Johnny Thoi came into college not knowing what to expect from the whole experience. All he knew was that it was the beginning of a new chapter in his life and he wanted to make the best of it. As such, he decided to dorm his first year in college. He made many friends but realize that as soon as he left the dorm environment, those friendships started to fade. Yearning to find a longer lasting relationship with his fellow college mates, he began to search elsewhere. He didn’t have to look far though because at his work, were 4 brothers of Delta Sigma Pi. Brothers Mohammed Ali Merchant, Eric Huang, Benjamin Greene, and co-founder Adam Su all worked under the same roof. All four brothers had been suggesting that Johnny come out and check out the Sigma Beta Iota colony process but from what he heard in high school, fraternities were all about drinking and partying and he didn’t feel that it was something that would benefit him. After Sigma Beta Iota received their charter as the Pi Sigma Chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi however, Johnny’s interest in joining perked. He watched quarter after quarter as his fellow co-workers recruited and initiated the Beta and Gamma pledge classes and decided that enough was enough and in the Spring quarter of 2009, Johnny decided that it was his time to pledge.
