Alice Hung

Alice Hung is a 4th year, Economic major minoring in management at the University of California, Irvine.

During the winter quarter her second year, she started looking into organizations and clubs that would help her professionally, socially and personally. At that time, she stumbled upon a new business fraternity, Sigma Beta Iota Colony, now Delta Sigma Pi.

What started out as an information session, turned into an interview, and before she knew it, she was admitted for pledging for the fraternity. By May 31st, 2008, Sigma Beta Iota became the Pi Sigma Chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi.

Her decision to join Delta Sigma Pi was the best decision she’s made in college. Through this, she has gained friendships that can last a lifetime, self-discovery, and the professional skills beneficial to the business world.  Going into this, she was shy and quiet. However, day-by-day, it has transformed her into a whole new person. Starting out as just a member, she took the initiative to hold positions and now, she is currently the president.

Apart from Delta Sigma Pi, her college life would not be complete without a study abroad outside the United States. Choosing a country was difficult, but she ended up choosing Hong Kong.

Why Hong Kong? The honest answer is because she thought it would be easier to get around since she knew the language. Nonetheless, she was very interested in Hong Kong’s city life. Because she is of Chinese descent growing up in a suburban area, she thought Hong Kong and it’s fast pace lifestyle would be the perfect place to learn about her culture.

Hong Kong is an amazing place. The food, sights, shopping and culture were so different that it was astonishing to experience it all. Seeing that this time abroad was her first time out of the country, her perspective and views on the global world changed. She became more open-minded and respectful of other cultures.

The friends she has met abroad are those that she still keeps in contact with. The four months that they spent together and the memories that were created will always be remembered. Exploring a new place, getting lost and making an adventure of everywhere they went, and adapting to a new environment brought them all closer together. Not to mention, everyone came from a different school or background so they were all able to learn from each other.

Besides her college life, her family has been one of her top priorities.  Growing up in a Chinese household, she was always taught never to forget her Chinese roots and where she came from. To this day, she still has that in the back of her mind. With the help of her parents and brother, they molded her into the person she is today.

Being the oldest of two, She’s always had the image of being responsible. She was the one doing well in school, being active and the “good kid.” Her brother, George, on the other hand, was the lazy one, or the one that didn’t do so well in school. Something in him must have prompted him to change because out of nowhere, he decided to join the Marines. One day, he’s unmotivated and lazy; another day, he’s a Marine and for that she is very proud of him.
